Fiber to the Home

Frequently

Asked Qs

We are bringing fiber to the homes and businesses in your neighborhood. As your local telecommunications provider, Polar has been on the cutting edge of technology serving area communities for over 70 years. We are committed to providing the most advanced products and services along with the best customer experience possible. We believe every one should have access to a quality broadband Internet connection, no matter where they live.

What is Fiber to the Home (FTTH)?

Fiber to the home (FTTH), also called fiber to the premises (FTTP), is the installation and use of optical fiber from a central point directly to individual buildings such as residences, apartment buildings and businesses to provide high-speed internet access. FTTH dramatically increases connection speeds available to computer users compared with technologies now used in most places.

How will FTTH benefit me?

• Highest quality and most reliable connection.
• High speed Internet at rates up to 1Gig!
• Equal upload and download speeds that are fantastic for streaming video, music downloads, photo sharing, online banking, web surfing, online gaming and so much more!
• Feature rich phone service with crystal clear connection.
• Increased productivity for businesses.
• Increased property value.

Will I need special equipment?

Yes, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). An ONT contains the electronics that convert light pulses from a fiber optic line to electronic pulses that power voice, broadband and streaming video services.

Do I have to be home when the ONT is installed?

Yes, Polar will mount equipment, optimize WiFi and install data wiring inside your home or business. Our Customer Service Representatives will contact you prior to set up an appointment with you.

What does a Network Interface Device (NID) enclosure look like?

This enclosure will be located on the outside of your home or business. It measures 16 H x 13 W x 4 1/2 D. Voice customers will also have an additional box installed inside your home or business which will power the unit. It will also contain a back-up battery in case of power outage. Broadband Internet only customers will have a power transformer to power the ONT.

How long will it take to install?

Installation can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the home or business. An average install should take about 1 1/2 hours.

Will there be additional construction on my property?

Yes, the additional work on the property will include installation of fiber from the alley to the side of the home, splicing of fiber and cut over to the electronics that will include voice, broadband and video streaming services.
